The Location

The Chittle Homestead is about 10 minutes outside of Gig Harbor Wa (an hour south of Seattle, 20 minutes west of Tacoma, Wa). There is a charming downtown along the historic harbor where old fishing boats still reside alongside yachts, kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders. It is a popular walking and running path along the calm waters of this protected inlet of the bay and along the way you will pass antiques shops, restuarants, a wine bar, a brewery and cozy coffee shops as well as the historic netsheds of the croatian boatbuilders that once resided here.

The property is within 5-20 minutes of several state parks (Kopachuck, Penrose, Joemma, Manchester) with beautiful beaches, hikes, and places to put in your kayak or paddleboard. On the way, you will drive through rural farmland with peeks of charming secluded inlets of the puget sound.

We are also within 20 minutes of movie theaters, skating rinks, playgrounds, the Pt Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, movie theater, children’s museum, and all the normal groceries stores, big box stores, hospitals or anything else you might need.

Heading out towards the Olympic Peninsula are some longer day trips….

  • Cute little towns like Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Sequim, and port townsend,
  • The Saturday farmers markets in Chimacum and on Vashon Island
  • Farms like the Finn River cidery where you can taste cider, eat wood fired pizza, listen to music and watch the kids play.
  • Hikes to waterfalls and hot springs
  • And of course the beautiful wild windswept beaches of the Olympic Peninsula.

wpid-Photo-20151116144520343.jpgThe Land

When you arrive at the 6 acre Chittle Homestead, you will wind up a long gravel driveway past an old growth tree whose branches support a wood swing and give us much shade in the hot summers.wpid-Photo-20151116144520290.jpg

To your right you will see our growing orchard with 5 older fruit trees and 8 more we planted since we moved here….apples, plums, peaches, pears, persimmons, figs. Under the branches of these trees is home to our beloved flock of 8 chickens and 2 ducks (although lately they have been mostly free-ranging on the property)….they all have names which you will know by the end of your visit,  and they will love following you around during your stay.

To your left you will see my soon-to-be office, a little vintage travel trailer where I greet visitors and write masterpieces. This will be a space available for those coming to the homestead for solo work or coaching…..heat up a pot of tea and wpid-Photo-20151116144522062.jpglook out at the garden, meadow and orchard.

The property then opens to the right into a large meadow leading to our little red barn (someday will be our little antique/craft workshop) wpid-Photo-20151108112120221.jpgand play structure, and to the left into our main garden, squash tunnel, perennial garden, snap pea teepee, cherry trees, hazelnut trees, sunchokes, and berry orchard (blueberry, raseberry, goji berry, josta berry, current, gooseberry. The driveway ends at our main home and workshop.

Beyond the parking area lies a large meadow that will soon be home to sheep, a flower farm, an aquaponics greenhouse for growing vegetable and fish year round, an outdoor kitchen/covered sitting area/ woodfired pizza over  AND…..THE TINY HOME that, once built (hopefully in 2016) will be the quiet haven for our visitors on the homestead.

(Sign up here to be notified about PRE-BOOKING in the TINY IMG_3138HOME to support us in building it!)

Behind the tiny home site lies 3 acres of forest to explore….filled with huckleberries, maples, mushrooms, and cedar. There is one IMG_3021rough path that we hope to expand to more trails that make the forest even more accessible for walking and quiet contemplation.

All our produce and animals are grown using organic inputs and we are learning about using permaculture to create sustainable systems although we are far from experts at this point! We love making things functional AND beautiful but there is always some project going on or animal poop to step in….because this is a homestead and we really LIVE here and make all the messes that normal living makes.

imageThe Vision

Our ultimate vision for the homestead is to create a beautiful, mostly off-grid sanctuary for gathering,  bold brainstorming, experimenting, and sharing of ways to do things differently. We have a deep desire in our hearts to be living a self-sufficient lifestyle where the homestead is “our job” and feeds us what we need to live….food, income, community.
